Access to high-quality education programs was a valuable benefit of membership in both the AAMGA and NAPSLO. With the merger of the two organizations into the Wholesale & Specialty Insurance Association, that benefit has expanded with a slate of offerings that is comprehensive and provides quality professional education for members in a variety of roles and in all phases of their careers in the wholesale, specialty and surplus lines industry.

“The education program is an area in which the creation of WSIA results in an expansion of options for members,” said Brenda (Ballard) Austenfeld, Education Committee co-chair and president, National Property Practice, RT Specialty. “By combining the existing offerings of both associations into WSIA we have education programs for just about any need you would find within a member firm, small or large, and the programs are developed specifically for surplus lines professionals, so the takeaways are immediately applicable when you return to your office.”

WSIA will offer these on-site programs during the next year:

In addition to the full slate of traditional on-site education programs, WSIA offers two online training courses. Harry Johnson, Education Committee co-chair and COO, Johnson & Johnson, Inc., said that those courses can be can be accessed online at any time by members. The first course, Surplus Lines Fundamentals, is a primer for anyone interested in learning the basics of how the surplus lines market works, and Johnson said that it is an ideal starting point in training new hires. The Surplus Lines Fundamentals course was developed collaboratively with The Institutes and is also available to educators for inclusion in university curriculum at no charge.

“WSIA subsidizes the cost of these online programs for members and students, and participants can elect to earn CE credits in both courses,” said Johnson. “We believe that making these courses easily accessible for members is an important investment in the future of the industry.”

The second online course, Surplus Lines Compliance, is designed for professionals with less than two years of compliance job training or experience and covers a variety of material including an overview of surplus lines licensing, diligent search, tax remittance and policy disclosure. This program was recently reformatted with an interactive HTML format, which allows brokers to interact with the content in a way that reinforces learning while using a modern and fun instructional design.

“I would urge all members to take a look at these opportunities, particularly those that you aren’t familiar with,” said Scott Anderson, Education Committee co-chair and executive vice president, Concorde General Agency. “As we’ve merged the education offerings of these two organizations, members will find that there are options available they weren’t aware existed, and that they’re not only extremely affordable, but also represent a really great return on the time investment for participants. We are all aware of the challenge of spending time out of the office for continuing education, but every one of these programs receive phenomenally positive reviews, and participants consistently report that the return on investment was great.”
